The Sussex County Democratic Committee will hold its annual spring dinner from 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at the CHEER Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown.
Guests are invited to attend an evening filled with fellowship, tasty cuisine, uplifting music and a chance to hear local candidates make a pitch for each person’s vote.
This year's dinner will feature a special tribute to retiring Sen. Tom Carper, honoring his years of dedicated service and commitment to the people of Delaware. Organizers are also honored to announce Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester as keynote speaker. As she prepares for her election contest for the role of senator, Blunt Rochester's insights and vision will undoubtedly inspire all in attendance.
"With the upcoming elections posing significant challenges, it's crucial to energize and mobilize all Delawareans," said Jane Hovington, Sussex County Democratic Committee chair. "Your attendance and engagement at our spring dinner will play a pivotal role in rallying support for our party and its candidates."
The SCDC relies on the generous contributions of supporters to continue its vital work in Sussex County. Whether purchasing tickets, sponsoring a table or donating, this financial support ensures that the committee can effectively advocate for Democratic values and initiatives in the community.
"We are counting on your support to help us maintain a strong presence in Sussex County," said Velda Scye, co-chair.

Rehoboth Beach, Del., April 1, 2024 – Mitch Crane, a former district judge and veteran strategist in Delaware politics, will address the next meeting of the 14th Representative District Democratic Committee April 10. Presenting a program entitled “Delaware Politics 411,” Crane will provide an overview of the Delaware political structure, focusing on elected offices and campaign strategies that win elections.
Currently an adjunct professor at Delaware State University in the Masters of Public Administration program, Crane has been a licensed trial attorney since 1977 and served as an elected judge in Chester County, Pa. He was a member of the West Chester (Pa.) City Council before moving to Delaware, where he served as chief deputy insurance commissioner and chair of the Delaware Manufactured Home Relocation Authority.
Active in Delaware politics and civic affairs, Crane is a former president of Delaware Stonewall, an organization representing the LGBTQ+ community, and chair of the Sussex County Democratic Committee. He served as campaign manager for Senator Russ Huxtable’s successful run in 2022 and again works in that capacity this year.
The 14th RD program will begin at 5 p.m. with a Dutch-treat dinner at Iron Hill Brewery, on Route 1 north of Rehoboth Beach, followed by Crane’s remarks at 6 p.m., and committee business at 6:30. The 14th RD committee represents Democrats who live in the Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach communities.
All registered Democrats are welcome to participate in 14th RD meetings. Those planning to attend the April 10 meeting should RSVP by April 9 to c.fruchtman@comcast.net
Rehoboth Beach, Del., March 14, 2024 – The 14th Representative District Democratic Committee has endorsed Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, for reelection to the Senate District 6 seat. The committee voted to endorse Huxtable at its March 13 meeting, marking its first endorsement of a Democratic candidate in the 2024 election season.
Originally elected to the Senate in 2022, Huxtable has quickly emerged as a legislative leader, writing and sponsoring critical bills such as the measure to prohibit commercial development in Cape Henlopen State Park. In one of only two races to flip a traditionally Republican seat Democratic, Huxtable came to office representing the coastal communities of Milton, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.
He has since sponsored legislation to develop surplus state-owned property for affordable housing and encourage state agencies and businesses to purchase Delaware-grown foods. He also sits on seven Senate committees, and serves as chair of the Agriculture Committee and vice chair of the Environment, Energy & Transportation and Housing & Land Use committees.
A native Delawarean with a bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of Delaware, Huxtable spent two decades working with housing nonprofits prior to becoming a state senator. He developed a reputation as a national leader in affordable housing and community development, serving as a speaker, advisor and advocate for nonprofits and states.
In his personal life, Huxtable is active in the local community, coaching soccer and baseball, cooking meals for shelter residents and volunteering for other service projects. He lives in Lewes with his wife and their two children, both of whom attend public school in the Cape Henlopen School District.
In announcing the 14th RD’s endorsement, committee chair Jeff Balk remarked that the action will support Huxtable with funding, publicity and grass-roots volunteers. “In his brief tenure as our state senator, Russ has already demonstrated that he’s an outstanding public servant who gets things done for our community,” says Balk. “His reputation as a conscientious legislator and Democratic leader is well earned. It will be an honor and a privilege to have Russ as our Senator for another term.”
In accepting the endorsement, Huxtable stated, “I am honored to have the endorsement of the 14th Representative District Democrats. Without the strong support of what is the strongest Democratic committee in Delaware, I would not have been successful in winning the Senate seat in 2022. Their support is a great foundation for my re-election this year."
Our featured speaker at our April meeting was political strategist Mitch Crane.
Eugene Young, Jr. 2024 Candidate for U.S. Congress addresses the crowd at our March meeting.
The Eastern Sussex Democrats have announced their first endorsements for the upcoming Democratic primary and the November general election. The members present at the organization’s February 7th meeting unanimously voted to endorse State Senator Russ Huxtable for State Senate District 6, State Representative Stell Parker-Selby for Representative District 20, and Dana Paskins for Sussex County Council District 3.
First elected to the State Senate in 2022, Huxtable has proven himself to be a dedicated and effective legislator, authoring and sponsoring important legislation to prohibit commercial development in Cape Henlopen State Park as well as addressing many other critical issues.
Stell Parker-Selby was elected to the 20th Representative District seat in 2022 in one of only two races that flipped a traditionally Republican seat to Democratic control, the other being Huxtable’s State Senate bid. Parker-Selby has well established roots in the area and has been an outstanding representative for the interests of her constituents.
Dana Paskins, a retired US Air Force officer who grew up in Sussex County, will bring a fresh and progressive voice to a County Council that too often seems to favor breakneck development over preserving the very special quality of life in Sussex County.
“All three of these candidates represent what is best about the Democratic Party in Delaware,” said Kathy Hughes, President of ESD. “They are dedicated to ensuring that everyone in Sussex County can enjoy everything that makes life here so special. We are proud to endorse these three Democratic candidates, and we look forward to supporting their campaigns.”
